We often need reminders like this so that we don’t inadvertently, in our pursuit of good intentions, contradict our child and deprive him of one of his most important things: self-esteem.
Self-esteem comes not only from praise or recognition, but also from dealing with small problems on your own. This could be coming up with a new game/entertainment when you’re bored, thinking about the answer when a question arises, choosing clothes, finding a solution yourself, etc.
Of course, we, the parents, are there too, watching silently, because we know that it is at times like these that a child’s self-esteem and sense of independence grow.
These are two of the most important factors in today’s world.
We notice, we try, we observe, and only when necessary do we intervene or help.
“If you do too much for your children, you are increasing your self-esteem by stealing theirs!
Daniel Amen”
More to the point: If you do too much for your child, don’t let them get bored, have a ready answer for everything and a solution to any problem, your self-esteem will increase, at the expense of stealing their self-esteem.
